The species was hunted to the brink of extinction by 1935, when fewer than 300 individuals survived globally. Legal protection granted in 1935 allowed the population to recover, and by 2026 the southern right whale population along the South African coast exceeds 6,000.

Hydrophones deployed in Walker Bay have recorded the low-frequency moans and belches that male right whales emit during courtship, audible up to 10 kilometres away. Shore-based observation from the clifftop paths remains popular, but boat tours provide access to the deeper offshore channels where breeding activity concentrates, particularly around Danger Point and Dyer Island.
